DOMINIK PABIS

Private sphere

The works presented here are a part of a whole series which I presented for my BA diploma at the Gdansk Academy of Fine Arts in 2002. I hung the photographs in a darkroom, which created additional effects as, to some extent, it showed the real conditions in which the photographs had been taken (a pocket, handbag, drawer, bread box, a drum of a washing machine... dark places, rather inaccessible to the eye). The guests of the exhibition were given torches to " peep" at the private sphere , which meant looking for photographs in the darkened space. This minimum of intimacy with the uncovered world of macro-sphere was also connected with the type of material and the technique of pictures. Little film boxes with holes, placed in dark places, inaccessible to the eye, exposed the films to light for a dozen or so minutes. Because of their miniature size (not more than several centimeters) they were ideally composed  into the "landscape". They became ... a "mute participant" in the world of small, common objects of everyday use in the macro scale. The scale was increased by large photograph formats (100x70cm) to emphasize the illusion of macro-sphere.
